San Diego Padres at Miami Marlins – July 28, 2012 | MLB.com Preview

July 28, 2012 in Regular Season, Trades

The Marlins hope to get some early returns on the Hanley Ramirez trade when righty Nathan Eovaldi makes his first start for Miami on Saturday.

The 22-year-old Eovaldi, acquired along with Minor Leaguer Scott McGough on Wednesday for Ramirez and Randy Choate, was 1-6 with a 4.15 ERA in 10 starts with the Dodgers this season, and he also appeared 10 times for Los Angeles last year. He gave up just one run despite scattering seven hits over 4 1/3 innings against the Mets in his last outing as a Dodger. He struck out seven batters in that game, tying a career high.

Eovaldi may prove to be the gem of the Ramirez deal. The Dodgers certainly thought a lot of the youngster, who looks to kick off a successful tenure in Miami.

“He commands the zone well for a young kid, competes his butt off and isn’t afraid of anything or anybody,” Dodgers assistant general manager Logan White said before the season. “I think you’re looking at a kid that, as long as he stays healthy, should be a heck of a big leaguer for a while.”

Buehrle’s complete game saves the Marlins bullpen

May 6, 2012 in Featured, Regular Season, The Latest

Mark Buehrle threw a complete-game five-hitter and pinch hitter Greg Dobbs drove in the go-ahead run to lift the Miami Marlins to their season-high fifth straight victory with a 4-1 win over the San Diego Padres on Saturday night.

With a bullpen depleted due to overuse recently and closer Heath Bell getting demoted, Miami manager Ozzie Guillen was counting on Buehrle to pitch deep in the game, and he delivered.

Buehrle (2-4) allowed one run and five hits with two walks and three strikeouts in a game that lasted 2 hours, 18 minutes one day after the teams played a 12-inning game that lasted 4:45.

Buehrle, one of the Marlins’ key offseason free-agent signings, threw his first complete game since Oct. 2, 2010, with the Chicago White Sox. Buehrle was coming off his shortest start of the season, a five-inning stint in a 9-5 loss against Arizona.

Omar Infante, who doubled in the go-ahead run in Friday’s 9-8 win in 12 innings, had two RBIs with a double and a sacrifice fly.

Giancarlo Stanton hit a solo homer in the ninth and Hanley Ramirez, who came into the game hitting just .198, had three hits.

Dobbs’ pinch hit single in a two-run eighth inning put the Marlins ahead.

Jose Reyes led off the inning with a walk and Emilio Bonifacio followed with an infield single. After Dale Thayer replaced Clayton Richard, Ramirez reached on a fielder’s choice, Dobbs pinch hit forAustin Kearns and singled to center for a 2-1 lead.

Infante then hit a sacrifice fly.

Richard (1-4) gave up three runs and nine hits over seven innings. The left-hander struck out seven and walked three.

After two of the NL’s lowest-scoring teams combined for 17 runs on 24 hits on Friday night, the clubs reverted to their previous form.

Ramirez led off the Marlins’ fourth with a one-out single but was thrown out going to third base on Kearns’ single. Infante followed with a run-scoring double.

Chase Headley tied the score in the sixth on an RBI single that scored Jesus Guzman, who doubled.

The Marlins will go for the sweep on Sunday afternoon on a 4:05 PM eastern time start. Ricky Nolasco will taken on Joe Weiland on the mound.

Marlins Make it Four Straight in Nail Biter in San Diego

May 5, 2012 in Regular Season, The Latest

It has literally been by the skin of their teeth that the Marlins are on a 4 game winning streak and sometimes, that’s the way the game works. Previously they couldn’t find a win, let alone a hole to shoot a ball through for a hit. Their 6 game losing streak was snapped with some heroics back in Miami and now it seems they are unstoppable away from the new digs and the Longball Lagoon.

With a 5-0 lead and Josh Johnson on the mound, it was looking like an easier win for the Fish as they stretched out their legs on this road trip while hoping to give the bullpen a rest. At the end of this 12 inning marathon, the Marlins had tossed away two leads and used up 6 relievers to get their fourth straight. Truly a Pyrrhic victory.

What emerges are some concerns – is Josh Johnson truly healthy? His command is very much off as he left pitches over the plate and watched his 5-0 lead evaporate in just 2.2 innings when he was pulled from the game.

“You’re up, 5-0, and JJ is on the mound, you feel good about yourself,” Guillen said. “I just wonder if he’s not feeling good. He says he feels good, but command is not there. A lot of bad pitches. With two strikes, keeping the ball up. Right now, what’s killing him is he doesn’t have any command of his pitches.”

Then there is Heath Bell. His season seems to be very bumpy and there are questions circulating about whether or not he will keep the closer role through the weekend, let alone for the rest of the season. His problems also can be attributed to location as he has walked 10 batters already versus only 6 strikeouts. Hitters are hitting .308 from the left side and over .400 from the right side.

But it was Omar Infante who, again, comes up with a big hit to give the Marlins back the lead in the 12th inning which was the eventual game winner. Steve Cishek, also, has emerged as a possible candidate to replace Bell if his struggles continue. Getting the 9-8 win, the Marlins were able to get their 4th straight win, but more questions loom on the horizon about two of their big arms.
