January 20, 2013 in Offseason
Reports are that the Marlins are close to signing Matt Downs, an infielder with a little bit of pop that has spent the past two seasons with the Astros. He did have 10 home runs and batted .270 in 2011 in just 199 ABs, but batted .202 with 8 home runs last season.
The 29 year old can play 2B, and will add some depth to the IF which, after Donovan Solano and Adeiny Hechavarria, only has Nick Green and possibly now Downs.
Another report is that the Marlins are interested in Matt Capps, the former Twins reliever whose contract was bought out for $6M. The only report to surface so far is the Barry Jackson note on it, but if there is a possibility, it could prove to be a low risk move to bolster the bullpen after the Marlins tried to make a splash with failed free agent Heath Bell last season.
