Marlins Grab Much Needed Win Late; Stay in First Place

You would expect a team named after a fish to tread water and with a .5 game lead over the Phillies coming into last night's mini series (not the kind you see on TV) with the Reds, that is what the Marlins did. They put off grabbing a win over the visiting squad until the 14th inning, despite several opportunities.  That is the advantage of being the home team versus the road team, which the … [Read more...]

Josh Johnson Named NL Player of the Week; Beats Out Other Marlins

Quite an opening week for the Fish as they splash their way to the best start in baseball, 5-1 but also see several of their players get nominated for NL Player of the Week. The award belongs to Josh Johnson, however, as he would put up some very nice numbers to kick off his 2009 campaign. With an ERA of 0.57 in 2 starts, one of which was a complete game, Johnson got two W's while also striking … [Read more...]

Marlins Ink Josh Johnson

Coming back from Tommy John surgery, Josh Johnson pieced together 14 excellent starts and went 7-1 with a 3.61 ERA striking out 77 in 87.1 IP. Luckily, Johnson didn't come back for the full season, as it would have cost the Marlins even more. Instead, the Marlins and Johnson agreed to a $1.4M contract which enables everyone to avoid arbitration with the 24 year old right hander. Read more … [Read more...]

Willingham’s Back is Back; Rabelo Sent Down

His back is baaaaackk! Josh Willingham, who has been out for about two months, has been recalled from his rehab stint. He is available to play and seems to be healthy and ready to go. Willingham hit just .231 in his rehab stint in Jupiter, but it was just to get his timing back. In the meantime, Mike Rabelo, who blundered badly by failing to tag a runner in a loss to Oakland, was sent to AAA … [Read more...]

Marlins Will Be Buyers

Expect the Marlins to be buyers this season before the July 31st trade deadline. Just don't expect them to make any big moves. Jayson Stark even speculates that the Marlins will be buyers. For anyone at BSPN to speculate as such means it is bordering on the obvious and predictable - so you can bank on that. But you can't bank on the Marlins trading prospects away for a big name. Won't happen. … [Read more...]

Miller Masters Mariners; Josh Johnson Rehabs

When the season began, many were questioning the decision to drop him into the rotation. Now, it is looking like he belongs. Andrew Miller got his 5th win of the season while pitching his most gutsy against the Mariners last night. He pitched 7 innings only striking out 2, but he scattered 6 hits and allowed only 1 run. "I think I did a good job pitching the zone other than that (fourth) … [Read more...]

Marlins Could Soon See Starting Pitching Help

Josh Johnson pitching against the Padres July 4, 2007

They are sorely missed. The wins that were coming at the beginning of the season are starting to slip away here in the middle portion of baseball's marathon. Why? The reason is simple - when your starting pitching routinely fails to throw as many innings as your relievers, the game is going to turn upside down for you very quickly. Mark Hendrickson has seemed to fall back to earth with a short … [Read more...]

Marlins Sweep DBacks

The score board read 4-0. Arizona fans must be dumbfounded because they were swept by what seem to think is their mirror image. What is more amazing, however, is the total transformation that Andrew Miller has undergone. Start calling it the Wiley-factor. Frankly, we have already propounded the Midas-like ability he has had in a Marlins uniform as a pitching coach, but this is just more … [Read more...]

Injuries Offer More Optimism for Marlins

When Josh Johnson went down and under the knife with Tommy John surgery, the Marlins were most obviously losing out on a valuable prospect. He had finished the 2006 season with 24 games started, 157 innings pitched, and a 12-7 record. He definitely was maturing as a pitcher and ready to take a step forward in 2007. But the Marlins suffered another major blow in 2007 - they lost another Rookie of … [Read more...]

Anibal Sanchez Throws In Bullpen

One step closer to returning from shoulder surgery last June, Anibal Sanchez threw off a mound on Friday in front of pitching coach Mark Wiley."It was only his fifth time off the mound, but he looked good," Fredi Gonzalez said. Sanchez is feeling pretty motivated, saying that he hopes to return to the rotation by the All Star Break. The Marlins have not set a return date, but the session was for … [Read more...]
