Despite early-morning buzz Thursday that the popular former Yankee was being considered as Boston’s new hitting coach, Martinez was hired in the same capacity later in the day by the Miami Marlins.
Martinez is the first major hire by new Marlins manager Mike Redmond, who is still searching for both a pitching coach and bench coach.
Martinez, 44, had served recently as a special adviser to GM Brian Cashman, but the Yankees granted permission to both the Marlins and Red Sox to interview the former first baseman for their respective hitting coach positions.
“Tino’s a great guy. he was a tremendous player, obviously he knows hitting,” Cashman said. “His hitting philosophy matches ours, which is why we gravitated towards him as a player. He’s a good man, he’s a world championship player; he’s got a lot to offer.”
