Josh Johnson Named NL Player of the Week; Beats Out Other Marlins

April 14, 2009 in Awards

Quite an opening week for the Fish as they splash their way to the best start in baseball, 5-1 but also see several of their players get nominated for NL Player of the Week. The award belongs to Josh Johnson, however, as he would put up some very nice numbers to kick off his 2009 campaign.

With an ERA of 0.57 in 2 starts, one of which was a complete game, Johnson got two W’s while also striking out 15. He didn’t give up a run in 6 2/3 innings to start the season and had a scoreless streak going which extended back to last season – he is 9-1 since returning July 10th last year from elbow ligament surgery (Tommy John surgery).

The complete game came at a critical moment as the Marlins were facing the Mets and their #1 starter, Johan Santana who hadn’t received a loss in 18 straight starts. In fact, it was the Marlins 3rd complete game since September 16, 2006 when Ricky Nolasco broke the Marlins’ 301 game streak for non-complete games. Johnson has thrown the other two himself.

The other Marlins nominated? Jorge Cantu, Emilio Bonifacio, and Hanley Ramirez, who should be a regular fixture among the nominees.
