It has been a disappointing tenure in Miami for Jeremy Hermida. The potential was there for the former 11th pick but it just never materialized. In 2009, Hermida hit .259 with 13 home runs and 47 RBI; his OBP was just 348 and he K’d 101 times. It was frustrating for most Marlin fans to see Hermida possess a laser arm in RF but make some bone-headed mistakes out there in fielding the ball.

So, the Marlins pulled the trigger on a trade – with another familiar franchise the Boston Red Sox. In return, the Marlins received Hunter Jones and Jose Alvarez, both lefties from the Red Sox farm system.

After making 2.2M this past season, Hermida was up for arbitration and could stand to make more money heading into 2010. Not a valuable move for the Fish considering they have options for the outfield position. Perhaps the Marlins will keep Cody Ross around as a result; they could just go with Brett Carroll who has shown great defensive prowess as well as grit on offense.

This is a move about the future though. Hermida was not going to be a part of it. It is debateable what role Jones and Alvarez play though, too. Still, this is a typical Beinfest move – get pitching in return to continue to build up the assets you have on hand.

Randy St. Claire has experience both as a big league pitcher and as a pitching coach. He has spent 7 years with the Montreal Expos/Washington Nationals. The Marlins pegged him as their man for getting this young pitching staff to rise to the next level as they finished 10th in the NL for staff ERA.

With young talent like Josh Johnson, Andrew Miller, Chris Volstad, and Sean West all standing over 6′7″, there is a high ceiling for these pitchers. Mark Wiley has been a steady hand – he was able to reshape Dontrelle Willis’ career and it was evident that his touch was needed for this Marlins’ staff after the Joe Girardi era ended with dumping Rick Kranitz on our hands for another year. So, Wiley came back and the Marlins pitching staff took some steps forward. This season, however, it seemed that Wiley had run his course despite the Marlins finishing 2nd in the NL East (87-75) with the lowest payroll in baseball. Wiley was shocked seeing as the team had performed well, but he did leave a clue about why he may have been dismissed:

“I felt like I did what I could do. I felt like I didn’t want to put too much pressure on young kids early in their career.”

Perhaps there wasn’t enough accountability on the young pitchers? Volstad did allow far too many home runs despite having a strong start to the season, it just was an unbearable problem and he was sent down.

Don’t get upset for Wiley though, he has accepted that special assitant position within the front office staff and will stay employed by the Marlins. This is a classy move for the Fish as they retain a guy who has helped their rotation out immensley over the years. The question remains, what will Randy St. Claire bring to the position? What kind of things will he do in order to help this young staff?

“I just think it’s communicating, whether working with young or old pitchers, and being open to what they feel,” he said. “It’s trying to get them comfortable and confident.”

That doesn’t sound a whole lot different than the laidback approach Mark Wiley prefers. The question has to be, why was Wiley let go? St. Claire did work with this current ownership group when they were working in Montreal together, so they know what to expect from him. He was sacked by the Nationals earlier in the year when the pitching staff was not showing much progress. It would have been nice, however, to have some talent on that staff to see what could be done. Should Marlins fans be alarmed?

It seems that worst case, we have a younger version of Wiley in house now with St. Claire. It also should be noted that St. Claire was not necessarily the top choice of the Marlins brass as other candidates were snatched up. Wiley also gets to linger as he takes a cushy job upstairs. St. Claire will now have to find a way to tap the potential of the forest of pitchers that is Josh Johnson, Chris Volstad, Sean West and Andrew Miller. If his tenure this year in Washington is any indication of what is to come, we may be in for more misses than hits.

Well, despite their best efforts the Fish were not able to pull off a stop into the post season. The Rockies got hot, the pitching grew cold. All in all, the Marlins put together a winning season, which is a great achievement for this franchise considering most did not give them a chance to compete. Instead of the Marlins in the celled, it is the Mets.
You can’t feel too bad about the Marlins coming up a bit short. It’s times like these that help you appreciate the championships a bit more, giving more perspective. It also sets up the future nicely as players like Chris Coghlan and Hanley Ramirez show us how great they are. The future is bright and for the Marlins to even have one is a treat in itself.

No matter how many games the Marlins win, it just seems like the Rockies mirror them. When the Marlins lose, that’s when the Rockies let up and lose. It is a shell game right now for the NL Wildcard. The Marlins sit 5 games out and have the San Francisco Giants merged between them and the leading Rockies.

Is this still a realistic possibility?

There are 26 games left for the Fish. That means they will have to win 18 of them to hit that 90 win plateau, making them have to go 18-8 the rest of the way. That would then mean the Rockies would have to go 13-13 just to force things into a tie to end the season (the Rockies also have 26 games remaining). For a team 17 games over .500, that doesn’t seem to be a likely expectation at this point of the season.

There is still a chance for the Marlins to creep into the wildcard, but yesterday’s blown opportunity by Leo Nunez certainly didn’t help matters.

Yet, what about the division itself? The Phillies are 6 games ahead of the Marlins and at one point, as recent as a few weeks ago, they were looking like the team of destiny from the NL East. All of a sudden, they have lost a few games and the Marlins were able to make up ground. Remember, these two teams have unfinished business at the end of the season – they square off 6 times to end the season. If the Marlins can make up a few more games, say, get it down to a 3 game deficit, they could win 5 of those games and take the lead.

In order for the Marlins to have any chance for the postseason, they have to win each series they play and pick up a few sweeps. A series win each time out would mean 16 wins to end the season. They need to somehow get 18 to hit the 90 win mark, which is usually where the wildcard leader ends up with. The fact that they play the Mets and Nationals a few more times (Mets twice, Nats once) helps. Also, the Marlins may get help from the Cardinals as their success may have them start shutting it down at the end of the season – which increases the Marlins’ chances for a series win there, too.

It’s a tall order, but that is to be expected of a playoff run. The Rockies and Giants also have their work cut out for them, too. The Marlins need a few breaks and really haven’t gotten any yet. They have played their way into the chase but the distance seems to be growing quickly.

Baker cooks up a 2 run home run! Number 9 for the season, and gives the Marlins back 2. They are now up 6-2. #

Sean West is hurting himself. Not playing defense has cost him 5 runs tonight. Hammer TATOOED that ball. 6-5, Marlins. Got to do some work. #

Nice 1, 2, 3 from the Hopper. I just love this guy as a reliever. Wish he could be a starter, but as a long relief guy he's pretty good. #

#Marlins Brett Carroll for Man of the Year: http://tr.im/bcmoy RT @MarlinsMedia. Just another reason to root for Brett Carroll. #

Baker delivers again – Cantu advances Hanley to 3B and Baker drives him in to add on a run. 7-5, #Marlins. Great situational hitting. #

I think Hanley may get pulled tonight, but who knows. He is limping a little, that hammy must be barking. He's played through it before. #

Badenhop gets through 3 innings and helps put the Marlins back on course for a win. 9-5 now after 6 innings. Keep it up Fish. #

Reds over ATL right now 3-1; Phillies losing to Houston 6-0; Giants losing to Brewers 2-0; Rockies up 1-0 over Arizona after 1 inning #

Coghlan gets to 1B again. This guy is just having an incredible run right now. 12 game hitting streak. 19 multi-hit games since August. #

Leo Nunez on the mound to close it out and gets it done with a pop out. #Marlins win 9-6. A chance to move up, too. #

Braves lose; Phillies lose; Giants tied 2-2 with Brewers in bottom of 7th; D'backs leading the Rockies 3-2 in the bottom of the 5th. #

@camdoug1 Amen. Our Noles need to get a win on Monday… in reply to camdoug1 #

Let me just say now, I LOVE Brett Carroll. I think this guy is just a great character guy and you can't help but root for him. #

Brett Carroll reminds me a lot of Dutch Daulton. I don't know what it is. But reports are his return to the club house was most welcomed. #

If Coghlan doesn't get serious consideration for ROY, it is a laugh. http://bit.ly/LeHG2 #

Marlins get a few more add-ons. Got to love the way things have changed in this series. Hope it continues. #

Baker gets his 25th double of the season. Got to love the Marlins' 2 headed beast behind the plate. #

Is it just me, or is old Dan Uggla becoming kind of a crafty leader these days. His vocal opposition to Hanley and his homer last night. #

Big win. Lindstrom closes it down. Nolasco gets the win and Cogger gets 2 hits. Even the series with the friggin Braves. #

What a crazy friggin game. Either the Braves are cashing in those "souls for wins" specials Satan has going, or the Marlins are choking. #
It felt good earlier on when Brett Carroll came up and cleared the bases with a double. Chipper does it and I want to vomit in my own mouth. #

I wonder if there will be any retaliation for hitting Diaz. I mean, just because a guy is a douche bag doesn't mean he should get hit. Right #

Maybin draws a lead off walk. Nice. Welcome back, 2009 ROY candidate. #

Look, ma, another double play! Wow! These Marlins sure are good at getting two outs at once. #

Kiko gets Beaker. C'mon, who doesn't think LaRouche looks like Beaker from Sesame Street/Muppets? #

You have got to be F'ing kidding me. Really? Escobar? Really??! #

Coghlan is just such a great young hitter. He should get rookie of the month, and why not rookie of the year? #
Hit number 47 for the Cogger. Every hit he gets tonight tallies on to that franchise record. #
