Marlins’ top two live up to their billing | MiLB.com News | The Official Site of Minor League Baseball

November 7, 2012 in Awards, Fish Farm

It was a big year for Marlins prospects, particularly the top two.

The top of the crop — Christian Yelich and Jose Fernandez — also had the best seasons in the organization, winning the Marlins’ organizational Player and Pitcher of the Year awards respectively while turning in two of the biggest breakout seasons in the Minor Leagues.

Along with Marcell Ozuna and Adam Conley, four of MLB.com’s top six Miami prospects warranted inclusion as Organization All-Stars. The group also features a healthy mix of veterans who, in the words of Marlins director of player development Brian Chattin, “anchored” Triple-A New Orleans.

But it was the potential-filled young players like Yelich and Fernandez who stormed through the lower levels and paved the way for both Class A Greensboro and Class A Advanced Jupiter to advance to their league championships.

Marlins’ Emilio Bonifacio is NL Player of Month » TCPalm.com

August 3, 2011 in Awards

Florida Marlins outfielder Emilio Bonifacio was named the National League Player of the Month for July on Wednesay. He batted .380 (38-for-100) in 26 games, topping all qualifying NL hitters.

In addition, Bonifacio led the majors with a .466 on-base percentage and 16 stolen bases, and tied for the major league lead with 27 runs scored.

Asked if he’s ever had a month like this at any level, Bonifacio said, “No, I don’t think so. Possibly in Santo Domingo (winter ball).”

Starting June 28, Bonifacio hit safely in 26 consecutive games, the second-longest run in franchise history behind Luis Castillo’s 35-game hitting streak in 2002. Bonifacio’s streak ended Friday in Atlanta, and Saturday he began another and has now hit safely in four straight.

Gaby Sanchez NL Player of the Week

May 10, 2011 in Awards, Regular Season

Gaby Sanchez was on fire and got some recognition for it. Last year he finished 4th in the Rookie of the Year campaign but this year he seems to be picking up where he left off. He finished the week with a .464 AVG and a .531 on base percentage for the week.

Edwin Rodriguez thinks this is just the beginning for Gaby – he is a fine hitter and is going to start getting attention. For Sanchez, he is just happy to help his team out and finds great satisfaction in being a part of this lineup. “I feel like we have a great hitting lineup. It’s one of those things that we have to do whatever we can do, to get guys on, move them over to second and third and get them in.”

Congrats to Gaby Sanchez for his first career player of the week honors. Read More.

Chris Coghlan: Rookie of the Year?

August 10, 2009 in Awards, Regular Season

coghlan_hit streakI know it may be a stretch at this point, but in a month or so you can point back to this blog and say, “Ahh! There’s a man of vision!” Well, that too might be a stretch, but no one can deny that Chris Coghlan is quietly putting together an impressive body of work in this his rookie campaign.

One of the most difficult things to do in all of sports is hit a baseball. Add to the fact that you have to lead off and set the table for your team’s offense and you got quite a responsibility. Oh, and you’re a rookie.

Let’s get the bio out of the way – Coghlan is 24 and was drafted in the supplemental draft in 2006 out of Mississippi. Incidentally, the kid is a Florida native, hailing from Palm Harbor. Called up on May 8th against the Rockies, Coghlan made an immediate impact going 2/4 and scoring a run. Currently, the rookie is on a hitting streak – which set a franchise record for multiple hit games in a row with 8. He has a chance to extend that record tonight against the Astros.

Perhaps the acquisition of Nick Johnson has helped his bat. Is is a coincedence that his current hitting streak extends back to the Nick Johnson debut? His average has risen from .255 to .285, scoring 8 runs along the way.

Whose the competition? Let’s take a look and you decide:

Right now, the front runner has to be J.A. Happ. He is pitching really well for the division leading Phillies. As for the other candidates, there is no one who really stands out. Looking at the stats, the rookie with the most home runs was Rasmus with 11 homers, but is only batting .248. Rasmus was an early pick for the ROY, along with Cameron Maybin.

McCutchen has exploded onto the seen, but his limited time in the bigs may hurt his final numbers – but he has the best overall line of the group .292 AVG, 7 HRs, 9 SBs and 40 RBIS. Dexter Fowler has 26 SBs, but is only hitting .265. McGehee has 9 homers and a .308 AVG which on those numbers alone could make him a close 2nd behind Happ. Parra’s line is .293 with 5 home runs and 5 SBs, 41 RBIs.

Then there is Garrett Jones, who is hitting .291 with 12 home runs. His 19 RBIs seems ridiculous to look at considering his power production and that may adversely affect his consideration for the top spot in the NL. Then again he didn’t make his debut until July 1st and already has passed by Rasmus.

Coghlan has some very good stats that compare favorably. With a .285 AVG, 7 home runs, and 44 runs, he is definitely in the mix. The question is, can he separate himself from the pack and even stave off the potentially gawdy numbers of Jones, Happ and even McCutchen? With the 8 game multiple hit streak going, this may be his chance to shine. The addition of Nick Johnson certainly has helped Coghlan and if he continues on this pace, he could end up with the hardware at the end of the season.

Josh Johnson Named NL Player of the Week; Beats Out Other Marlins

April 14, 2009 in Awards

Quite an opening week for the Fish as they splash their way to the best start in baseball, 5-1 but also see several of their players get nominated for NL Player of the Week. The award belongs to Josh Johnson, however, as he would put up some very nice numbers to kick off his 2009 campaign.

With an ERA of 0.57 in 2 starts, one of which was a complete game, Johnson got two W’s while also striking out 15. He didn’t give up a run in 6 2/3 innings to start the season and had a scoreless streak going which extended back to last season – he is 9-1 since returning July 10th last year from elbow ligament surgery (Tommy John surgery).

The complete game came at a critical moment as the Marlins were facing the Mets and their #1 starter, Johan Santana who hadn’t received a loss in 18 straight starts. In fact, it was the Marlins 3rd complete game since September 16, 2006 when Ricky Nolasco broke the Marlins’ 301 game streak for non-complete games. Johnson has thrown the other two himself.

The other Marlins nominated? Jorge Cantu, Emilio Bonifacio, and Hanley Ramirez, who should be a regular fixture among the nominees.

HRam and Uggla Named to NL All Star Team

July 6, 2008 in All Star, All Star Game, Awards, MLB News, Roster, Uncategorized

Dan Uggla and Hanley Ramirez

Hanley Ramirez and Dan Uggla will represent the Florida Marlins at the 2008 All Star Game.  Hanley became the second Marlin ever after Gary Sheffield in 1993 to be voted in by the fans as a starter.  Dan Uggla was selected by his peers as a reserve.  Congrats to both of these guys, and we at Marlinsnation.com wish them all the best as they bring the teal to Yankee Stadium.

For Danny Uggla, his second All Star appearance is especially significant, as it will be his only chance to play in Yankee Stadium (unless the Marlins wind up playing the Yankees in the World Series this year).  Dan comes from a long line of Yankee fans, and for his father, the dream to see his son play in Yankee Stadium will finally be realized at the last possible moment.

This will be Hanley’s first appearance as an NL All Star, beating out J.J. Hardy of the Brewers and Miguel Tejada of the Astros in the fan vote.  There is a possibility that Clint Hurdle will make HRam his leadoff hitter, although Alfonso Soriano, the Cubs leadoff man, has also been selected to start for the National League.  Leadoff or no, Hanley’s first All-Star appearance has been a long time coming, as he has clearly blossomed into the best shortstop, and arguably the best player, in the National League.

In other news…

Top prospect Chris Volstad has been called up to the Marlins roster for today’s series finale in Colorado.  He will initially be available out of the bullpen, and most expect him to start a game during either the Dodgers or Padres series.  Hopefully, this is the start of a long and distinguished career for the Palm Beach Gardens native.  We have been hyping this kid’s talent for a long time here at Marlinsnation.com, lets see if he delivers.
