With a stockpile of quality starter arms, it appears the Marlins may be looking to shore things up a bit.
With Jose Fernandez’s return, the rumor mill has started churning as the Marlins are looking to consolidate their talents in the rotation.
Jarred Cosart was just optioned back to AAA New Orleans to work on his location after getting exploded on the mound against the Cubs (4 hits, 7 runs will do that to you).
Adam Conley, a hopeful to get into the rotation, has made nice progress all season but could be a lefty reliever down the road.
Henderson Alvarez remains on the DL with no real timeline in sight.
The season has been a disappointing one for the Fish and most of it is due to a lack of consistency in the rotation. At times, the bullpen has let the team down (see Cishek’s struggles), but the notable disappointments of the starters are concerning. Mat Latos and Jarred Cosart have struggled; the former seems to be getting out of his slump. The latter just got optioned. That said, there have been some nice pieces put into place – Dan Haren has been the most consistent Marlin starter to date, Tom Koehler and David Phelps have been battling to stay in the rotation and can string together quality starters. There are also some nice young arms (Conley, Nicolino, and Urena).
The question is, will the Fish make a deal to improve the team on the field? Or will they resort to just dumping salary and freeing up more cash. Stay tuned.
