Brett Lilek was a lefty who many were slating to be drafted in the late end of the first round. He suffered some setbacks this year but most agree that getting him with the 50th pick offers great value and potential for the Fish.
The Marlins were looking to get a college ready arm to help fast pace some of their pitching a bit and to help replenish their system. With Lilek, they were able to get a lefty who has shown an ability to get hitters out with three strong pitches and who also should progress a bit faster through their system.
“The college starting-type pitcher that’s advanced and with a good delivery, we needed that,” Meek said. “We tend to go with a lot of high school kids. This guy, just for us, really fit. We thought college pitching was something that we needed to address. This guy really fit for us here.”
