The Marlins continue to improve their roster heading into the 2014 season by grabbing another OF bat away from the Mets in Jordany Valdespin.
The Dominican native will bring some speed and a touch of power to the OF. The potential is there for Valdespin to have an impact, but he comes with some questionable baggage. He had a 50 game suspension while playing for the Mets in 2013 for the Biogenesis scandal, which led to the team to make a decision to non-tender him and even bring him back at the MLB minimum. The Marlins signed him to a minor league deal without a Spring Training invite which again means the Marlins are not heavily invested in Valdespin should he prove to be a headache again for a big league club. It’s interesting that he would sign with the ballclub that is based where the scandal took place, severely crippling Ryan Braun and Alex Rodriguez’s images. In fact, one of the Mets’ top prospects, Cesar Puello, was also in hot water over this.
In Valdespin the Marlins acquire a talented player with pretty good ceilings of speed and power and being only 25, has some time to resurrect his tainted baseball reputation provided he puts in the work. He will at the very least provide organizational depth in the OF but could get a call to play with the big club this year if he turns it around. Another low-risk, high-reward move for the Marlins that comes at the cost of one of their division rivals.
