Reports are that Jose Dariel Abreu is going to sign with the Chicago White Sox for a 6 year deal reportedly worth $68M. It would be the largest sum ever for an international rookie.
The Marlins missed out on an opportunity to make some waves and give a facelift to their offense right away. Perhaps they downgraded his value because of questions about his defense and long term value. Abreu is 26 and in 6 years would be 32 but doubts abound rather he could pick his position at 1B defensively and not be a liability.
That said, if this kid hits, and he is Cuban, the Marlins just missed out on a serious game changer that could have helped rehab their image and put them back on the map for contention. Now, they will be sifting through the discount bins to see what turns up. The only other scenario would be to trade pitching prospects to land a veteran bat, but that doesn’t seem to fit the Marlins’ tradition MO.
