Marlins Spring Training 2013: Fish Stew 2/25
Just a collection of some of the articles circulating on the Marlins today as they are knee deep in Spring Training:
Marlins took on the Braves today (lost, 7-6) and Mike Redmond reflected on his time with the man in the dugout across the field, Fredi Gonzalez and his gratitude towards Carlos Tosca.
Jeffrey Loria launches a pre-emptive strike to the media, a defiant “letter to the fans” that explains the recent trades and purging of the roster. In it, he states that the buck stops with him and puts forth the idea that this team needed to get younger and rebuild its core for a longer term vision of winning. Does that include keeping Giancarlo Stanton – if you are dead serious, you do whatever you can to sign this guy long term with the Marlins. Greg Cote of the Miami Herald, weighs in.
Henderson Alvarez, a key piece in the trade with the Blue Jays, is looking to impress and seems to be doing just that. He has a penchant for giving up the long ball (29 HRs off of him last year as a Blue Jay) but he is reportedly keeping the ball low in the strike zone. Alvarez will be looking to score some glory for his Venezuelan team in the WBC.
Wade LeBlanc makes a strong bid for the 5th spot in the rotation – 10 pitches, 10 strikes. Scoreless over 2 innings today against the Braves. Already picking him to win the 5th spot and also, surprise a lot of people – the way Ricky Nolasco did for the Fish back in the early part of his career, although with much different numbers. In fact, vote in our poll and tell us who you think will win the fifth spot.
