WASHINGTON— Manager Ozzie Guillen after watching Emilio Bonifacio re-injure his surgically repaired left thumb Friday night had no doubt his second baseman was done for the season.
Saturday, Guillen wasn’t quite as certain, but he’s still operating under the premise Bonifacio’s next game will be in spring training. Marlins General Manager Michael Hill chose not to speculate until after the club’s medical staff has a chance to evaluate him.
X-rays taken late Friday night came back negative, which Hill said is encouraging.
“The pin, it was in the same place,” Guillen said. “Maybe he just strained a ligament. They sent him to the doctor who did the surgery. He’s going to be out for 15 days and hopefully no more than that.
