Ever since getting hit by a pitch in Spring Training, things have been a bit derailed for the Marlins 2007 top draft pick. Matt Dominguez was competing to be the starting third baseman heading into this season, but has to work his way back first.
Dominguez was 3/18 in four rehab games at A Jupiter and then 2/15 in four rehab games in AA Jacksonville. He is now being added to the AAA New Orleans Zephyrs roster where he is expected to complete his rehab and possibly get a call up later in the season.
Dominguez has consistently shown major league defensive skills, drawing comparisons to Ryan Zimmerman with his great glove at the hot corner. It is his bat that is questionable, yet the raw talent does seem to be there. The Marlins brass, at any rater, are high on the former first round pick who signed for $1.8M back in 2007. In fact, Dominguez is constantly drawing comparisons to the Braves’ Jason Heyward, who was drafted a few slots behind him.
