It hasn’t taken long for the Ricky Nolasco Trade to pay off in a big way … for Jupiter, that is.
Right-hander Angel Sanchez, one of three pitching prospects acquired from the Los Angeles Dodgers on July 6 as part of the Nolasco deal, combined with two Hammerheads relievers in no-hitting the Clearwater Threshers in a 5-0 victory Monday night.
Sanchez (2-0, 1.69) waked two and struck out three in six innings in his third start for the Marlins’ Class A Advanced affiliate in the Florida State League. Relievers Colby Suggs (two innings) and James Nygren (one inning) finished the no-hitter.
Sanchez, 23, hails from the Dominican Republic. He flirted with a no-hitter while pitching for Class A Great Lakes of the Midwest League on May 6, when he held Wisconsin without a hit until surrendering a lead-off double in the seventh.
The 6-foot-3 Sanchez reportedly sports a mid-90s fastball and strong slider. Signed in 2010, he pitched well for Great Lakes (8-4, 2.82) in 2011 before struggling at Class A Advanced Rancho Cucamonga (6-12, 6.58) of the California League last year. He spent time with both teams this season before the trade.
