They left Miami looking like they were right where they wanted to be. Riding a thrilling win with back to back home runs from Dan Uggla and Cody Ross to beat the Cubs for the series win, the Marlins were looking like world beaters. Their next opponent, the Washington” Natinals” were the laughing stock of the league.
Except the Nationals, as they are actually known, were playing some pretty good baseball of late.
This was actually a pretty good test for the Fish. If they came into Washington and won the series, indeed even swept it, they would prove themselves worthy of a playoff spot. Sure, they may not get there in the standings at this point, but at least you could feel the team was playing at that level. Now, they are looking like just another team trying to get there but ultimately won’t.
Sure, things can turn around in a hurry. They could start a win streak right now, but they must first hold off the Nationals for a sweep with a win today. They choked up a 4 run lead as if they were the Mets in the series opener – with Josh Johnson on the mound, no less. Then last night’s game watched the Marlins come up short in rally after rally.
So, will the Marlins rally back tonight and get a win? It is still early, but the way they have responded in this Nationals series sure takes away from the thunder they created in that Cubs series.
