So this Manny thing might have some wheels… now ESPN.com’s Buster Olney and FoxSports.com’s Ken Rosenthal are reporting that the Marlins are in “serious discussions” with Boston over Manny for two or three players in return, either Hermida or Willingham “plus pitchers”. Hmmm…
Seems like Senor Berardino over at Sun-Sentinel.com largely agrees with my opinion of the situation, and expounds on why he thinks this deal will never happen, all of which make sense. If you happen to be wondering how Manny may look in teal, go give this article a read and you may not be so optimistic anymore.
However, it seems like the Red Sox are finally serious about moving Manny, and the one team that is being mentioned the most at this moment as a possible destination is your Florida Marlins. Also, according to the two reports, the Red Sox may be willing to pay at least a good portion the remainder on Manny’s 2008 salary. Sounds like they are pretty desperate to me.
Sorry, I still don’t buy this. As many of you know, I’m one of the more optimistic Marlin fans, but I can’t even see this trade clearing all of the hurdles in its way, nor can I see how this would really help the team. Would it put people in the seats? Yeah, maybe, but that should never be a reason to rent a moody superstar for three months. Stay tuned though, something really weird could happen soon.
In other news, 2003 World Series hero Pudge Rodriguez was traded to the Yankees today for Kyle Farnsworth straight up. Too bad, I would have loved to have seen him back here, but its probably a good thing we didn’t overpay the Tigers for a 36 year old catcher.
