According to SI.com, our very own low-budget Marlins may have actually contacted the Sox about disgruntled superstar Manny Ramirez. Now pick your jaw up off the floor and keep reading…
Apparently the deal would be Hermida plus wayward prospect and Josh Hamilton protege Jeff Allison for Manny (sorry about the Josh Hamilton/drug use reference, that was kinda low… but still funny). Obviously, since Mr. Ramirez feels that he can get more than the $20 million the Sox pay him now, if this actually does happen after this season Manny will be out of South Florida faster than you can say “stupid trade”.
Frankly, this is one of the more ridiculous rumors I have heard in years. I highly doubt the Marlins have contacted the Sox about Manny; it just makes no sense at all from a baseball or financial standpoint. Its just too out there for me to believe.
But, if this trade actually does happen, I will be extremely pissed off. One, we cannot afford him. Two, while obviously Jeremy Hermida is nowhere near as talented as Manny, it would be a major mistake to let him go. Jeremy has boatloads of potential, and really seems to have picked it up after the ASB. Yes, there is a slight chance that we will trade Hermida in the offseason because he will now be arby eligable, but the smart money is on the Marlins keeping Hermida and letting Jakey or Scotty O or Cody go. I am under no illusion that the Marlins will keep all of our arby eligable players this offseason, but on the other hand I highly doubt that we’ll let all, or even most of them go. The third reason is that Manny is an effin’ douchebag. The main reason why the defending champion Red Sox are even considering giving up on one part of their two headed monstah hitting 3 and 4 in their lineup is the fact that he is more trouble than he is worth. The guy has caused major headaches for good ole’ John Henry, and they have simply had enough. I am absolutely certain that if Manny does step foot in the Marlins’ locker room he would become a cancer and a primmadonna that constantly demands special treatment. He does not play the game with anywhere near the passion that our young team does. Our team chemistry is very high right now, and risking that could be suicidal. He clearly does not fit in anywhere on this team. These aren’t your 1997 Marlins, or even your 2003 Marlins.
I tend to doubt that Manny goes anywhere, he just costs way too much and even though they cannot stand him anymore the Sox need him this year if they want to repeat. If he goes anywhere I see him ending up on either the Mets or the Phillies… most likely Philly. Honestly, thats a trade I want to happen: Manny to Philly. Philly would give up a few top prospects for a three month rental of a sulking moron. He’d probably cause just as much damage in their clubhouse as he has done in Boston, and would do here. The Mets would be great as well, another distraction is the last thing that they need now that they have apparently turned things around. But, Manny will probably just sit in Boston, ruin their chances for another title, and cash in somewhere else after the season.
If you ask me, Manny can be Manny somewhere else. Just say no.
