What a dramatic win for the Florida Marlins. Lost in their worst stretch of baseball this season, the Marlins were looking at yet another blown game. They had a 4-0 lead and watched it whither away. They took a 5-4 lead and watch that turn into a 7-6 deficit heading into the bottom of the 9th.
But with 2 outs, Cody Ross came to the plate and blasted a home run to right center and the crowd exploded into pandemonium. Tommy Hutton said it best, “you die with them, but then you love them”.
Ross’ homerun sealed the fate for the Reds tonight but it also showed the Reds the abilities of two of their ex-players. Ross was a Red, albeit briefly, in 2006. Cantu, who hit a home run earlier in the game and has 3 total in this series, was also a Red back in 2007 but was let go heading into this past offseason.
It was the Marlins 4th win over their last 12 games and it couldn’t have come at a much more needed time. Now the Marlins will face Aaron Harang while pushing out their young phenom, Ryan Tucker, who is making his MLB debut while leaping up from AA Carolina. This could be an interesting momentum builder for the Fish as they try and tread water in the NL East.
